Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I

 Written and performance exams are conducted to ensure that the individual has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to properly perform and record the results of seven basic field tests on freshly mixed concrete to be certified as “Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I”.

No prerequisites are required

Course Content
The covered ASTM Standards are:
• ASTM C172 – Sampling Freshly Mixed Concrete
• ASTM C1064 – Temperature of Freshly Mixed Portland-Cement Concrete
• ASTM C143 – Slump of Hydraulic Cement Concrete
• ASTM C138 – Unit Weight, Yield, and Air Content (Gravimetric) of Concrete
• ASTM C231 – Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Pressure Method
• ASTM C173 – Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Volumetric Method
• ASTM C31 – Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field


Class Agenda
Day 1
9:00 am – 2:00 pm: Theoretical Training
Day 2
8:00 am – 4:00 pm: Practical Training
Day 3
8:00 am – 9:00 am: Review the Instructions
9:15 am – 10:15 am: Written Exam
10:15 am – Until finished Hands on Performance Exam


Certification Instructions
ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet both of the following requirements:
1. A passing grade on the ACI written examination; and
2. Successful completion of the ACI performance examination.

The one-hour written examination is “closed book” and consists of 55 multiple choice questions. There are five (5) to ten (10) questions on each of the ASTM Standards. To pass the written examination, both of the following conditions must be met:
(a) at least 60% correct for each of the required standards; and
(b) a minimum score of 70% overall.

The performance examination is also “closed book” and requires actual demonstration of six of the required ASTM Standards plus a verbal description of sampling procedures according to ASTM C172. The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform or describe all of the required procedures for each standard.


Common Questions
1. If you fail in any portion of the written test, you must retake the entire written test.
2. If you fail in one or more of the seven performance tests, you must retake the entire performance examination.
3. Reexamination on the written or the performance examination must be taken within [1] one year of the initial examination. Otherwise, both the written and the performance examinations must be retaken in their entireties.
4. Recertification is necessary every [5] five years and requires successful completion of both written and performance exams again.
5. To verify pass / fail of exams, allow 2-4 weeks for ACI to process and score exams.


Books/Materials
Participants will utilize the ACI Concrete Field Testing Manual “CP-1 40th Edition: Technician Workbook for Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I”. Books will be received two weeks prior to the class you are registered for.


What do you need for class?
Participants will need their manual, No. 2 pencil and calculator in the class. PPE should be worn on the 2nd and 3rd days.
